“Hello, Lana here. Just calling for the tenth time to ask when your crew is going to come over and finish up the job you started a month ago. I hung up in disgust, wishing I could have slammed the phone down to show just how angry I was with Joe. Especially Hank, the foreman. Hank had a rugged, handsome face and a sexy squared jaw, like a cowboy. He was tall and muscular, like the others, but he could also speak knowledgably about politics or art like her old boyfriends. This is what you get for being cheap, I thought bitterly. Originally I was going to go with the same construction crew my friend Darla had when she fixed up her basement, but Joe’s company had offered to do it at nearly half the price. It was just too good to pass up. And yes, Joe had been quite charming, in a brawny way. There was a frank manliness to him that I didn’t often see in my circles. So I’d agreed to take him on. They had come promptly, tearing down my old window with childlike glee and ripping apart the walls. But then everything ground to a halt.

At first I was shocked. Never in my life had I seen such poor business practises. Who just up and leaves a project midway? I’d called and called, but it was always someone was sick, or had died, or hurt themselves. At first I’d been sympathetic, but how many sick uncles can you have?! The guys were too yellow-bellied to show their faces, or I would have given them a piece of my mind. In fact, I’d give them a few pieces, and sue the lot of them, except that the one I had stormed around to their office, there really had been a funeral.

The thing is, I’m used to being obeyed. I worked as a neurosurgeon at the city’s biggest hospital, and I kept command of my OR with an iron will. I didn’t claw my way up the ranks of medical school by being meek. This extended beyond my work to the other parts of my life, which would inevitably annoy my current boyfriend. But is it really that bad to be proud of being a person who made sure ‘shit got done’? I didn’t think so.

With one last sip of my coffee, I got up to dress and head to work. It was going to be a very long shift, and I had to stay focussed on the job.
